Selig Interested In Expanding Postseason

Bud Selig wants to explore expanding the postseason this winter.

Several years ago, Major League Baseball formed a committee to examine expansion but Selig said there were several factors that ended the discussion.

"It's a fair question," Selig said Friday before the St. Louis Cardinals played the Chicago Cubs. "We have less teams than any other sport. Eight teams make the playoffs. One wild card in each league. We certainly haven't abused anything."

Selig Expects Replay To Remain In Playoffs

Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, asked Monday night about any possible expansion of instant replay, said nothing is imminent but that it remains a topic for consideration after the upcoming postseason.

"I had a [conference] call with my committee last week, and I brought it up," Selig said Monday night, responding to questions by reporters. "I talk with a lot of managers and general managers, and I don't get the feeling that there's a lot of support for it -- at least in the conversations they have with me.

"I'm willing to consider it, but it's a complicated subject. Our committee said we need to study it more. We'll continue to look at it. There's no question baseball is a game of pace, and one needs to be very sensitive about it."

6th Overall Pick Loux Draws Crowd Of 15 Teams

Barret Loux, the first-round draft pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks who was declared a free agent after he failed a physical, threw an extended bullpen session Friday afternoon in College Station, Texas, for about 15 teams, including the Astros.

Area scout Rusty Pendergrass was at the workout representing the Astros, and the club was pleased with what it saw mechanically and physically.

"What we saw was pretty consistent with what we saw during the spring, so the process of them showcasing him, so to speak, has been portrayed not as a sprint, but more as a process that will go through the fall a little bit," Astros assistant general manager/director of scouting Bobby Heck said. "He's finishing up his degree this semester [at Texas A&M], and it's not really a race to get something in place, but they want to have something in place later in the fall and know where their landing place is for Spring Training."

Loux was drafted No. 6 overall and failed a physical reportedly because of arm problems. Major League Baseball declared Loux a free agent and available to sign with any club beginning Sept. 1, awarding Arizona compensatory draft picks.
