Average Salary Just Short Of $3M

The average baseball salary fell just short of $3 million this past season.

The 926 players in the major leagues before rosters expanded in September averaged $2,996,000, according to the annual report of the players' association.

The figures represent a 2.4 percent jump from last year's numbers, the lowest increase since the 2004 season.

The World Series champion Yankees had the highest average at $7.66 million per player.

Report: Selig To Step Aside In 2012

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has declined overtures from a group of owners asking him to stay on after his contract ends in 2012.

The Chicago Tribune originally reported the story, citing unnamed sources.

The sources said a group of five owners approached Selig asking him to stay on as commissioner.

Alomar, Larkin On Hall Of Fame Ballot

Roberto Alomar and Barry Larkin are among 15 first-timers on this year's Hall of Fame ballot.

Edgar Martinez and Fred McGriff are also new to the ballot.

The newcomers are joined by holdovers such as Mark McGwire, Andre Dawson and Bert Blyleven.

The remaining first-timers include Kevin Appier, Ellis Burks, Andres Galarraga, Pat Hentgen, Mike Jackson, Eric Karros, Ray Lankford, Shane Reynolds, David Segui, Robin Ventura and Todd Zeile.
