Marlins Plan To Dump Hermida, Likely Uggla And Johnson Also

With Florida expected to keep payroll around $37 million barring a surprising change in approach, the Marlins plan to dump Jeremy Hermida; believe they probably cannot afford Dan Uggla and likely will not re-sign Nick Johnson unless he settles for a deal well below market value.

There's also talk from Marlins people that the team might not be able to afford Jorge Cantu, but that's in question. Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco, Uggla, Cantu, Cody Ross and Hermida headline the list of arbitration-eligible Marlins players.

Marlins Could Give Johnson Four-Year Deal

The Marlins plan to offer pitcher Josh Johnson a multiyear contract this winter.

Johnson, who will be eligible for free agency in 2011, would reportedly be open to a four-year deal worth around $50 million.

However, the Miami Herald writes that it would be surprising if the Marlins offered Johnson that much money over the life of a new contract.

If he doesn't sign an extension, "our expectation is he will sign one of the two or three biggest free agent contracts ever for a pitcher," agent Matt Sosnick said.

Manny: Hanley Reminds Me Of Myself

Manny Ramirez sees a lot of himself in Marlins star Hanley Ramirez.

"He reminds me of myself when I was young because he uses all the fields," the Dodgers slugger told MLB.com of Ramirez. "He's just faster. Maybe even stronger."

In addition to Manny, Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter praised Ramirez at this year's All-Star Game in St. Louis.

"He continues to get better, year in and year out," Jeter said. "Baseball is such a numbers game, and I think people focus too much on numbers. You can be a better player and not put up huge numbers. But he just so happens to be putting up huge numbers on top of that."
