Tigers Exercise Valverde's $9M Option

The Tigers have exercised their option to keep closer Jose Valverde under contract for next season.

Valverde signed a $14 million, two-year deal in 2010 with Detroit holding a $9 million option for 2012.

He led baseball with 49 saves in 2011. He became the third player in major league history to save at least 40 games without blowing an opportunity.

Miguel Cabrera Ties LCS Hit Mark To Begin Career

The Tigers were eliminated by the Rangers in the ALCS, but first baseman Miguel Cabrera tied a Major League record in the six-game defeat.

Cabrera erupted to hit .400 in the ALCS, capping it with two home runs in Saturday night's 15-5 Game 6 loss to the Rangers.

His first-inning homer off Rangers starter Derek Holland tied the all-time record for an LCS hitting streak to open a career. It marked the slugger's 13th straight LCS game with a hit, dating to the 2003 NLCS with the Marlins against the Cubs.

Cabrera shares the all-time record with Greg Luzinski.

An outfielder and designated hitter who played from 1970 through 1984, Luzinski hit safely in 13 career LCS games beginning with the 1976 NLCS, when he was playing for the Phillies against the Reds.

"What can you say about him?" Justin Verlander said. "He's the best hitter in baseball, I think. He showed it on the biggest stage."

Rangers Advance To 2nd Straight World Series

Nelson Cruz and the Rangers are headed to their second straight World Series, finishing off the Tigers with a huge offensive burst to become the AL's first repeat champion in a decade.

Cruz set a postseason record with his sixth home run of the series, Michael Young hit a pair of two-run doubles in a nine-run third inning, and the Rangers romped to a 15-5 win Saturday night that won the AL pennant in six games.

Tigers Will Re-Evaluate Pitching To Cruz

Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz has five home runs in the ALCS against the Tigers, who have challenged him with inside fastballs.

On a conference call with reporters Friday, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was asked if Detroit would re-evaluate how they're pitching to Cruz.

"I think that would be a good idea," Leyland said. "If anybody on this call has any suggestions, I'll be willing to take it. He's a threat. His average hasn't been that good in the series, really, but he's a threat to hit the ball out of the ballpark at any time.

"We have not done a very good job of pitching him. We've had him actually set up for some situations where we thought we could make the right pitch and get him out, but we really haven't done that. To his credit, he's up there to hit the ball out of the ballpark. He's done it five or six times in the postseason, I believe."

Scherzer Isn't Nervous About Starting Elimination Game

The Tigers will send right-hander Max Scherzer to the mound for Saturday's Game 6 against the Rangers.

Detroit has to win the game in order to force a seventh game against Texas.

"I'm really not nervous about the situation at all. It's the opportunity of a lifetime," Scherzer said.

"It's the most exciting challenge I've ever had to face. The atmosphere in that [Rangers] Ballpark is awesome, electric. We're all chomping at the bits to play Game 6."

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said, "I'm proud of the way we set up our pitching. We couldn't ask for anything more."
