Padres Would Fool With Scoreboard Reading To Frustrate Penny

Former Padres general manager Kevin Towers says the team used to play with the radar readings on their scoreboard to frustrate some pitchers.

"We used to dial it down," Towers said with a smile.

"I know for a fact that every time Brad Penny pitched for the Dodgers in San Diego it was probably the lowest velocities he ever had. He liked velocity. He'd stare at the board. He was throwing 95-96 (mph), but we'd have it at 91 and he'd get pissed off and throw harder and harder and start elevating."

As recently as 10-15 years ago, pitch velocity was the exclusive domain of radar gun-toting scouts. Now, every ballpark in the majors displays velocities.

Penny's No-Hit Bid Denied By Scorer

An infield single broke up Brad Penny's bid for a no-hitter on Saturday as the Tigers defeated the White Sox.

With one-out in the sixth inning, Brent Morel hit a chopper down the third-base line. Brandon Inge backhanded it and made a throw in the dirt that first baseman Miguel Cabrera couldn't field cleanly to attempt a tag on Morel.

Official scorer Ron Kleinfelter called it a hit, not an error that would've kept the no-hitter intact.

"I still don't think I would've thrown a no-hitter," Penny said. "My pitch count was getting up there. I'm sure I would've given up a hit at some point."

After the game, Kleinfelter defended his decision.

"My decision is based on my understanding and application of ordinary effort," Kleinfelter said. "Based on that, I stand by my call. It was a base hit. Pure and simple."

Verlander Notches 1,000th Strikeout

Tigers right-hander Just Verlander notched the 1,000th strikeout of his career in Friday night's win over the White Sox.

"I said, 'OK, great. What's it for," Verlander said. "A thousand strikeouts? All right. Cool. I'm not really one to follow statistics like that, so I'm glad somebody was paying attention."

Zumaya May Need Another Elbow Surgery

Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list and may require more surgery on his right elbow.

Since his stay remains retroactive, he will be eligible to pitch again in May if healthy.

Zumaya continues to have pain in the tip of his surgically repaired right elbow.

If Zumaya doesn't pitch again this season, he might never pitch for the Tigers again. Hes eligible for free agency after this season no matter how much time he spends on the disabled list.

Tigers Could Put Martinez On DL

The Tigers are thinking about putting Victor Martinez on the disabled list.

He is dealing with a groin injury, leading Detroit to add Omir Santos to their roster as a reserve catcher.

Martinez aggravated a right groin injury in his first plate appearance Monday against the Mariners and was lifted for a pinch-runner.
