Leyland Likes What He Sees In Willis

Tigers manager Jim Leyland praised pitcher Dontrelle Willis after a very fluid outing during batting practice on Saturday.

"It's probably the best I've seen him since we acquired him. His delivery was good. He was around the plate. He had some depth to his breaking ball. We'll see how that translates when other guys (opposing teams) start showing up," Leyland said.

Tigers Trying To Avoid Closer-By-Committee

Tigers manager Jim Leyland doesn't want the team to use a committee to close games this season.

"I doubt if that's going to happen here," Leyland said Sunday morning. "I think we'll have a closer, and we'll have one or two other guys that would be capable of closing a game if the closer needed a day off."

Brandon Lyon and Fernando Rodney are the leading candidates to be the team's closer this season.

Willis: 'It's A Lot More Fun This Year'

Tigers pitcher Dontrelle Willis has lost weight, feels stronger and is excited about the 2009 season.

"It's a lot more fun this year," Willis said. "I feel stronger, and I feel strong, mentally.

"I'm a human being, I did the best I could do last year, but I didn't get it done," said Willis, who pitched only 24 innings in the big leagues.

"I'm ready to have fun this year and I'm pleased to be employed again. I'm happy, but not content. I know I can help this ballclub. It's a great place to play. The sky's the limit, and everybody seems ready to go."
