Despite his early struggles, Gary Sheffield will remain in the third spot in the lineup for the Tigers, according to the Detroit News.
"I still think they pitch him as tough as anybody in the lineup. One of the reasons I leave him up there is because they're going to walk him because they pitch him so tough," Leyland said.
"The other thing is it's too early to decide if he's just not going to hit," Leyland added. "If he's healthy, we're going to find out. I think it's a fair question, though, but I also wonder where those people think I should hit him."
"I've never really bought into having somebody else in the lineup. If he's not going to hit, don't play him. I'm not talking about Sheffield in particular; I'm talking about anybody."

Tigers' designated hitter Gary Sheffield is worried about his shoulder, according to the Detroit News.
He's had two cortisone shots in the last week, with the most recent having taken place on Wednesday. He returns to the lineup against the Angels on Friday night.
"I don't know what it's going to do," Sheffield said. "I don't know how damaged my shoulder is. When I got the shot in that area last year, my shoulder wasn't in the type of situation that it is now."
"At that point, it was for maintenance. I had a little tendinitis. It knocked it right out. This is after surgery. I need to find out why it's pinching in that area. That's what I want to know."
"Am I wasting my time trying to play? That's another thing. Once again, I have decisions to make. I'm not going to put myself through ... like the past. I'm not going to do it. I don't need to play. It's just a matter of having an opportunity to win again," Sheffield added.
