HOF Candidate Morris Was A Complete-Game Machine

Jack Morris knows his sometimes cantankerous mood around reporters as a player might have hurt his chances at getting into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. It would bother him more if it was something else. "I think my relationships with the press probably had something to do with it," Morris said a couple of years ago. "And I regret that. That was then. I was an ornery crank, no question about it. I did it to protect my players. I wish I could go back and do it over. But if you're voting on my personality, I can understand your argument."

Source: Dontrelle Agrees To 3-Year, $29 Million Deal

Pitcher Dontrelle Willis has reached an agreement in principle on a three-year, $29 million contract extension with the Detroit Tigers, a source told ESPN.com.

The deal includes incentives that could push the total value to more than $30 million, the source said. An announcement was expected after Willis took a physical exam Thursday in Detroit.

The Tigers acquired Willis and star third baseman Miguel Cabrera from the Florida Marlins in an eight-player trade at the Winter Meetings two weeks ago in Nashville. Willis will join a Detroit rotation that also includes Justin Verlander, Jeremy Bonderman, Nate Robertson and Kenny Rogers.

Tigers' Robertson Seeks Long-Term Contract

Nate Robertson could become a free agent after the 2009 season, but he wants to remain in the Tigers' starting rotation longer than that.

Robertson's agent Steve Canter said this week that Robertson would like to sign a long-term contract with the team this winter.

"He wants to stay in Detroit and play for the Tigers," Canter said in a telephone interview. "He appreciates everything they've done for him and his family."

"He's a proven guy in big games. He finished strong this year. If you look at what he's done career-wise, it's pretty significant."

Robertson, a 30-year-old left-hander, was offered salary arbitration last week. So, even if he does not sign a long-term deal, Robertson will receive a raise over the $3.26 million he earned last season when he went 9-13 with a 4.76 ERA in 30 starts.
