Tigers Sign First-Round Pick Crawford

The Tigers have signed Jonathan Crawford, their first-round pick in last week's Major League Draft.

Crawford, a right-handed pitcher out of the University of Florida, was the 20th overall pick.

The 6-foot-2 righty went 3-0 with a 2.10 ERA in six outings with Team USA.

Detroit's Hitters To Blame In Extra Innings As Well

There has been a lot of talk about how bad Detroit's bullpen has been this season, but the Tigers haven't excelled at the plate either.

The Tigers have lost four games in which they led in the ninth inning. Detroit is 2-7 in extra-inning games.

The bullpen hasn't been great in extra innings, allowing 11 runs in 21 innings for a 4.71 ERA, but the hitters have been even worse -- they've scored just five runs while hitting .198.

Rival Agent: Miguel Cabrera Should Renegotiate Now

Miguel Cabrera, who turned 30 in April, won't become a free agent until after the 2015 season.

Cabrera is widely regarded as the best hitter in baseball, but in two years his value might change given his age and the recent track record of mid-30s free agents.

"If I represented him," said one veteran agent, "I'd try to negotiate something right now. He's got better leverage at 30 than he'd have if he was trying to go someplace else at 32. I'd be shooting not so much for the years, but for the highest AAV [average annual value] in the game. And I think he could get that."

Some executives have speculated something along the lines of three years, $90 million, with a vesting option or two, tacked onto the $44 million he has coming in 2014-15.
