Rally Will Honor Rockies Wednesday

They were swept in the World Series, but the Colorado Rockies will get a rally in downtown Denver on Wednesday to celebrate the National League pennant they captured after an amazing 21-1 run.

City officials said MVP candidate Matt Holliday, ace Jeff Francis, third-baseman Garrett Atkins and Manager Clint Hurdle would be among the Rockies attending the 11:45 A.M. event.

Gov. Bill Ritter and Mayor John Hickenlooper also plan to be there.

Matsui Likely To Stay In Colorado?

Those who know second baseman Kazuo Matsui well believe his free-agent decision will depend as much on his comfort level as economics.

That gives the Rockies a decent shot of re-signing him.

General Manager Dan O'Dowd realizes that Matsui earned a raise from his $1.5 million but stressed that the Rockies won't let the market determine the value of the player.

Rockies Want To Sign Holliday To Big Extension

Rockies' owner Charlie Monfort wants to sign Matt Holliday to a longterm contract extension.

"There's a time and place for all that," said Holliday as he quietly cleaned out his locker Monday afternoon. "I am not thinking about any of that right now."

Holliday is in line to make between $9 million and $10 million in arbitration this winter, doubling his salary after putting together an MVP-caliber season: 36 home runs, .340 average and 137 RBIs, the latter two league bests. He talked Monday night after the game about how much he wanted ownership to keep this team intact. As much as everyone believes Holliday's future is hinged solely on money, a commitment to winning is just as important.

"It's up to the front office to make those decisions. But this is a good group of guys," Holliday said. "We aren't just teammates; we are friends."

Red Sox Win Another World Series

Gone are those pleading, pathetic days when the Red Sox were practically begging to win a World Series. There's a new monster in baseball, and it's in Boston.

Overwhelming in every way, the Red Sox swept to their second title in four years Sunday night. Jon Lester, Mike Lowell & Co. left little room for drama with a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies in Game 4.

Rookies Deliver 'Big' For Red Sox

The Red Sox beat the Rockies 10-5 on Saturday to move within one victory of winning the World Series.

Rookie center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury had four hits, including three doubles, scored two runs and drove in two more to pace a 15-hit attack as Boston grabbed a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven Fall Classic. The Red Sox can capture their second World Series crown in four years with a win in Game Four on Sunday at Coors Field.
