Cubs Using Jimenez Deal As Guide In Garza Talks

If the Cubs are going to trade Matt Garza before next month's non-waiver trade deadline, they are going to have to receive a significant offer.

An American League executive says Chicago is using "the Ubaldo Jimenez deal" as a model in talks regarding the right-hander.

That means the Cubs will demand two young, controllable players with big upside.

Wise Fools Umpire After Dropping Ball In Yankees' Win

Left-fielder Dewayne Wise was helped up by fans in the stands, saw the out call, and then thought, keep the glove closed.

Wise ran straight for the dugout after flipping into the crowd while trying to make a catch of a foul ball during the Yankees' 6-4 win over the Indians on Tuesday night.

"What was I supposed to do run back to left field?" Wise said. "I saw him looking at my glove so I just got up, put my head down and ran off the field."

Perez: Use Of Pine Tar Is Widespread

Chris Perez believes there are pitchers on every team who use pine tar and other substances to manipulate the ball.

"If before every game if they stopped and checked everybody's gloves or something there would be one or two guys on every team that would just get popped," the Indians closer said.

Perez, a former Cardinal, said he wasn't specifically calling out St. Louis for doing it.

"I've only played for two teams and more guys did it on the Cardinals than here," he said. "That's the only thing I was trying to say. It wasn't like an organizational thing."

Tampa Bay reliever Joel Peralta was suspended for eight games on Thursday for having pine tar on his glove.

Shapiro: Manny Unlikely To Return To Cleveland

Indians president Mark Shapiro says now is the time to go for the Division title, and the team is looking for ways to strengthen the first-place club.

Shapiro says GM Chris Antonetti will be heavily involved in trade talks before the July 31 deadline. But he says a Manny Ramirez return is unlikely.

"Chances of that are not real good," Shapiro said of the 40-year-old Ramirez, released by Oakland on June 15.

Acta Bypasses Questions About Manny Ramirez

When asked, Manny Acta offered no insight as to whether the Indians will consider signing Manny Ramirez.

"I'm not the guy to answer any of those questions," Acta said. "I'm the field manager. Talk to Chris Antonetti, he's upstairs. ... That's not part of my job."

Antonetti could not be reached, but at this time it's believed the Indians have no interest in Ramirez even though they are in need of a right-handed hitter.
