Indians Acquire International League MVP From Rays

The Indians have acquired Russ Canzler, the top player in the International League last season, from the Rays for cash.

Canzler, 25, played four positions -- right and left field, third and first base -- last season for Triple-A Durham, where he batted .314 with 18 homers and 83 RBIs in 131 games for the Bulls.

He was expected to be on Tampa Bay's roster this season; however, the club re-signed first baseman Carlos Pena and free agent infielder Jeff Keppinger.

Indians Place Carmona On Restricted List

The Indians pitcher known as Fausto Carmona has been placed on the restricted list following his arrest for false identity.

Carmona, whose true identity has been established as Roberto Hernandez Heredia, was arrested last week in the Dominican Republic on charges he falsified his name and birthdate to play in the United States.

With him on the restricted list, the Indians don't have to count him toward their 25- or 40-man rosters, and he won't be paid until he reports.

The Indians are trying to help get the pitcher known as Fausto Carmona to the United States.

Manny Acta claims the team is making the necessary moves to get Carmona to the United States for the coming season, but also will be prepared to go without him.

Carmona is accused of using a false identity to play baseball in the U.S. and faces a judicial process in the Dominican Republic. He was released from jail on Friday.
