Indians Lose Brantley For Season

The Indians will be without outfielder Michael Brantley for the remainder of the season.

Brantley, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list on Sunday, will have surgery to remove part of the hamate bone in his right hand.

He played with tendinitis in his wrist for several weeks, but the soreness subsided with treatment and rest.

However, he recently felt pain in his hand.

Brantley, Cleveland's leadoff hitter, batted .266 with seven homers and 46 RBIs in 114 games.

Thome On Return To Indians: 'Anything Can Happen'

Jim Thome is a member of the Indians once again, something he wasn't sure was possible not too long ago.

"Baseball's a weird thing," Thome said. "Anything can happen."

Thome, one of eight players in history to hit 600 career homers, accepted a trade on Thursday by Minnesota to go back to Cleveland.

He received a roaring ovation when he came up for the first time Friday at Progressive Field.

Before his first at-bat for Cleveland since 2002, he took off his batting helmet, bowed slightly and dug into the batter's box.

"You always think about one day returning, and when you're given the opportunity, it was really a no-brainer," he said. "I'm excited. I'm happy to be here."

Charlie Manuel On Thome: He's Like A Son To Me

Jim Thome waived his no-trade clause and has landed back with the Indians, but Philadelphia was a rumored destination as well.

Thome learned the craft of hitting under current Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, who heaped praise on the slugger.

Manuel managed Thome in Cleveland's minor league system.

"I know him just like my son, really," Manuel said.

"I spent that much time with him. He's very dedicated. Everything he's done, he's a credit to the game. His attitude is off the charts. He's totally genuine and totally legit."

Thome Traded Back To Cleveland

Jim Thome accepted a trade from the Twins on Thursday night to return to the Indians, the team he started with and one hoping its career home run leader can help it run down the first-place Tigers in the AL Central, according to an ESPN.com report.
