Shapiro Won't Discuss Lee's Lack Of Extension

Indians general manager Mark Shapiro would not comment on Saturday about the lack of contract extension negotiations with pitcher Cliff Lee.

"Over the course of spring training, we meet with a number of player agents," Shapiro said. "Consistent with that, we talked with Darek Braunecker, who represents Cliff.

"Other than that, there's really nothing for me to say. We never talk about negotiations."

Lee, who took home the AL's Cy Young award in 2008, said earlier in the week that Cleveland won't discuss an extension with him because of tough economic conditions.

Economy Will Keep Indians From Extending Lee

The Indians say that they won't discuss a contract extension with pitcher Cliff Lee, the reigning AL Cy Young winner, because of the uncertain economic times.

"They said they can't do it become of the economy," said Lee. "I'd like to spend the rest of my career here. I would have loved to get that out of the way. But I can't force that to happen."

Lee will make $5.75 million this year and the Indians hold a $9 million club option on him for 2010. He can become a free agent after that.

"They cited the economy as the primary issue for not negotiating an extension," said agent Darek Braunecker. "We have no issue with that. It's their prerogative and we respect that."
