Chapman Likely To Begin Season In Minors

Aroldis Chapman will likely begin the season in Cincinnati's farm system.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said Tuesday that the left-hander has adapted well, but his chances of making the team were decreased by a back injury that cost him a week.

"The injury set him back to the point where it's going to be tough for him to be ready to start the season as a [major league] starter," Jocketty said. "I think we needed the spring to figure out the best route for him. Even without the injury, we may have decided to send him someplace to get established first."

Chapman Leaves Game With Stiff Back

Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman left an appearance on Monday early with a stiff lower back.

Chapman has been bothered by the stiffness for several days.

"I'm not hurt," Chapman said through a translator. "I had a little stiffness in my lower back. It has been bothering me for a couple days. I was able to work through it in the first inning, but it didn't get loose in the second inning."

Chapman Allows HR, But Strong In Start

Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman struck out five and allowed a one-run home run to Milwaukee's Richie Weeks on Wednesday.

Chapman has allowed just one run in seven innings this spring and is making a strong case for Cincinnati's starting rotation.
