The Toronto Blue Jays have traded infielder Santiago Espinal to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for minor league right-hander Chris McElvain.

Espinal, who was an All-Star in 2022, hit .248 with two home runs and 25 RBI in 88 games last season. He is set to earn $2,725,000 this season.

McElvain, 23, went 5-5 with a 3.75 ERA in 23 games last season, including 19 starts, splitting time between two levels of Class-A.

The Cincinnati Reds have no timeline for the return of center fielder TJ Friedl, who fractured his right wrist while trying to make a diving catch in a game on Saturday in Goodyear, Arizona.

Friedl, who established himself as the Reds' everyday center fielder last season, broke the distal radius in the wrist and said Sunday he will be reevaluated in three to four weeks.

Noelvi Marte has received an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Boldenone, a performance-enhancing substance.

Marte made his debut for the Cincinnati Reds last season, hitting .316 with three homers in 35 games.

"The Reds fully support Major League Baseball's drug policy and its penalties," the team said in a statement. "We will have no further comment."

Marte was acquired in 2022 in the trade that sent pitcher Luis Castillo to the Seattle Mariners. He is ranked 35th in ESPN's Kiley McDaniel's top 100 prospects heading into this season.

Joey Votto has agreed to a minor league deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. 

Votto was born and raised 25 minutes from the Rogers Centre.

Votto, 40, played 17 seasons for the Cincinnati Reds, earning six All-Star appearances and winning NL MVP.

Votto struggled the past two seasons, batting .205 in 2022 and .202 in 2023.

Second baseman Jonathan India and the Cincinnati Reds agreed Friday to a two-year, $8.8 million contract, avoiding an arbitration hearing next week for the 2021 NL Rookie of the Year.

India gets $3.8 million this year and $5 million in 2025. The deal contains $2.05 million in additional escalators plus award bonuses.

The Reds signed two-time All-Star infielder and Cincinnati native Josh Harrison to a minor league contract.

The deal announced Monday by Harrison's agency, MSM, includes an invitation to spring training.

Tony Kemp is drawing interest from a number of clubs as the offseason continues.

The Toronto Blue Jays, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees have all been linked to Kemp.

The 32-year-old hit .209/.303/.304 with five home runs and 15 stolen bases in 419 plate appearances for the Oakland Athletics this past season.

Joey Votto is getting interest from three clubs, according to a report.

Outfielder Bubba Thompson was claimed by the New York Yankees off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday.

The 25-year-old hit .170 (9 for 53) with no homers, 4 RBIs and 4 stolen bases in 37 games with Texas last year. He batted .258 with 6 homers, 34 RBIs and 27 steals in 65 games with Triple-A Round Rock and Omaha.

Center fielder Harrison Bader and the New York Mets agreed on a one-year, $10.5 million contract Thursday, sources told ESPN, the latest in a series of short-term pacts for the Mets as they approach 2024 as a transitional season.

The 29-year-old Bader is a gifted defensive outfielder, but an inconsistent bat and injury issues have hampered him.
