Cubs Clinch NL Central Title

The Chicago Cubs clinched the National League Central Division title Friday night with a 6-0 victory over Cincinnati and Milwaukee's 6-3 loss to San Diego to cap a stunning comeback that no one saw coming only a few months ago.

"These kids deserve it," manager Lou Piniella said. "They really let loose. I mean, let loose. It's good to see. They let loose a lot of emotion.

"It has been a rough summer for us. It hasn't been easy, believe me. But these kids endured, and they got the job done, and now they're letting loose and having fun. A few of them mentioned to me, 'Let's have a couple more of these before we're through.' "

Carlos Zambrano pitched seven shutout innings for his 18th victory, and Alfonso Soriano and Derrek Lee homered to lead the Cubs to their first postseason appearance since 2003.

Griffey Likely Done For 2007

Ken Griffey Jr.'s assault on 600 home runs may have come to an end for 2007, as did the Reds' last chance at making the playoffs, in the eighth inning of Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Griffey left the game in the eighth with a lower abdominal strain and will return today to Cincinnati, where he will be evaluated by Reds medical director Dr. Tim Kremcheck.

With the loss, the Reds were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention and have only three remaining games against a contending team, so Griffey's return to the lineup this season is unlikely. Griffey has played in 144 games this season, hitting .277 with 30 home runs and 93 RBIs. He is seven home runs shy of becoming the sixth player in baseball history to hit 600 career home runs.
