Freel Escapes With Neck And Head Contusion

Reds right fielder Ryan Freel suffered a contusion of the neck and head following a collision with teammate Norris Hopper in the third inning of Monday's game against the Pirates.

The injury took place when Pirates catcher Humberto Cota drilled a line drive into the right-center field gap, and Freel made a circus catch but was clipped by Hopper, who sent the third-year outfielder sprawling on the warning track.

Freel, who seemed to have slammed his head on the ground, then lay motionless in front of the wall until he was immobilized and transported to Good Samaritan Hospital, where the CT scan revealed his injuries.

Reds' Freel Taken To Hospital After Collision

Reds center fielder Ryan Freel had feeling in all of his extremities and was coherent after colliding with right fielder Norris Hopper on Monday.

Freel, known for his all-out play, was down for 13 minutes while being examined and was taken off the field on stretcher. The frightening scene took place in the third inning of a game against the Pirates. Freel and Hopper chased a ball hit by Humberto Cota leading off the inning. Freel caught the ball on the warning track and his left arm was run into by Hopper. Freel was twirled around to his left and fell at the base of the wall.

After being examined by Reds trainers and physicians, Freel was turned over on his back, strapped to a stretcher, loaded into an ambulance and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital.

The Reds announced Freel's condition in the fourth inning. He was scheduled for further exams.

Reds Option Saarloos To Triple-A Louisville, Recall Livingston

The day after Kirk Saarloos failed to retire any of the seven batters he faced in Cincinnati's loss to Pittsburgh, the Reds optioned the right-hander to Triple-A Louisville and recalled left-hander Bobby Livingston.

"I don't feel like I'm the problem," Saarloos said. "I think I've had three bad innings this year. I felt like, in the other 20 appearances, I was throwing the ball pretty (darn) good. Those three appearances are the bed I'm lying in."

Saarloos, 0-4 with a 7.04 ERA, will work out of the Bats bullpen, manager Jerry Narron said.
