That his name came up at all, Narron said, suggests something about him. "Everybody in baseball has the idea that this guy is going to have a big year," Narron said. Reds interim general manager Brad Kullman said several clubs continue to ask about Kearns, including the Tribe. While he wouldn't say, "No deal," he did say, "If we thought Jake Westbrook was the one piece that would give us a championship, we'd do it." Westbrook was 15-15 in 32 starts with a 4.49 earned-run average last season. "What we have to be careful about is that we gave up a lot of offense when we traded Sean Casey and Joe Randa and we don't want to cut ourselves short on offense," he said. Castellini has a specific project for Beattie in the short-term, but the 51-year-old former major league pitcher also will get a look for the GM's job. "I think he's probably going to be a candidate," said Castellini. "But what I want him to focus on while he's here is to take a look at our entire pitching program, from soup to nuts, and determine what our plan is and let me know, because I've never been able to really fully understand what our plan is." Beattie spent nine seasons pitching for the Yankees and Mariners, compiling a 52-87 record and a 4.17 ERA. Cincinnati Reds Read the Full Story Discuss Send Feedback Buy Tickets Reds Jan 2006 Archive
