Larry Walker, returning to the lineup Wednesday after missing five straight starts with a herniated disc in his neck, homered in his first two at-bats against the Cincinnati Reds.
The often-injured outfielder hopes a cortisone shot he received on Monday will allow him to play to his ability. He's struggled while dealing with several ailments this season, hitting .247 with seven home runs and 29 RBI in 58 games. Walker, 38, has talked of retiring after the season.
"Hopefully everything gets better quick because I'm tired of really talking about it," Walker said. "I'm back for a day, at least."
Walker hit a two-run homer on the first pitch he saw from Ramon Ortiz in the second inning. He hit another two-run shot, his ninth, off Ortiz in the third.

"I'm having a good time," said Austin Kearnes when asked about playing in the minors. "The guys here are good dudes, and it probably was good for me to get away from the bad atmosphere that was in the Reds clubhouse."
And Kearns wonders if maybe another organization might be good for him.
"There comes a time when you want to get established with a team and play every day," he said. "Every time I'm with the Reds, they try to play four or five outfielders. You can't work your way out of any slump because they put you on the bench."
When he was sent down before the Boston series last week, he asked about a trade and was told by General Manager Dan O'Brien there was no interest in him.
"I called him on that because I've heard there is," Kearns said. "When Washington was in town, (Nationals GM) Jim Bowden told both Adam Dunn and me he continues to try to make trades for us."
Bowden, though, has said that his phone calls to the Reds are not returned and his e-mails to the Reds are not answered.
The Chicago Cubs have interest in Kearns, and when the Atlanta Braves were in town, manager Bobby Cox pointedly asked, "What's going on with Kearns and why is in Louisville? I sure like that kid."
Kearns is hitting .346 with five doubles in 26 at-bats in Louisville.
"I'm playing every day and hitting," he said. "As soon as I go back to Cincinnati, I won't play every day. They have the same situation ... too many outfielders. Sure, I'd like to be someplace where I can play every day."

The last-place Cincinnati Reds fired manager Dave Miley on Tuesday and promoted bench coach Jerry Narron to take over on an interim basis for the rest of the season.
Pitching coach Don Gullett also was fired. Vern Ruhle will handle the job for the remainder of the season.
ESPN's Peter Gammons reports that Narron is trying to hire former Red Sox manager Grady Little as his bench coach. Narron was Little's bench coach in Boston. Little is working in the Cubs organization as a roving catching instructor.
At 27-43, the Reds were 18? games behind St. Louis in the NL Central. Cincinnati lost 6-1 at home to St. Louis on Monday night in Miley's last game.
Earlier this month, Reds chief operating officer John Allen traveled to Denver to meet with Miley. Allen called the Reds' performance "unacceptable" and hinted that changes could be made if there was no improvement.
The Reds went 5-9 after Allen's remarks. Cincinnati has already had four straight below-.500 years -- its longest such streak since 1945-55 -- and has not reached the playoffs since 1995.

Analyst Steve Stone, the one-time Cubs TV analyst and 1980 AL Cy Young Award winner, said Monday the Cubs are considering dealing for left fielder Moises Alou, who is playing in San Francisco. Alou was a member of the Cubs from 2002-04.
Meanwhile, in Cincinnati, outfielder Adam Dunn linked recently demoted outfielder Austin Kearns with the Cubs ? as well as two other teams ? in Dayton Daily News report over the weekend.
Cubs officials said they have not been in contact with either the Giants or Reds about either Alou or Kearns.
Alou signed with the Giants as a free agent last offseason.

Austin Kearns, batting .224, was sent down to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. He hasn't started since June 5 after losing his spot in right field to Wily Mo Pena.
Cincinnati also placed catcher Jason LaRue on the bereavement list. LaRue returned to his home in Texas to attend the funeral of his grandfather. He won't be eligible to play until Wednesday.
Kearns was in a 3-for-36 slump and has hit just .176 with runners in scoring position this season. He had six homers and 25 RBI in 51 games.
