Floyd Gone In 2007 To Clear Room For Milledge

Omar Minaya has interest in Jose Contreras, and the White Sox will listen, considering Brandon McCarthy is ready to step in. However, the Sox surely would insist on Lastings Milledge, and a Mets official insisted: "Milledge isn't going anywhere. He's going to be our leftfielder in 2007."

Minaya Likes Contreras

The rotation name who will be most associated with the Mets, and any contender eyeing elite rotation help, is Oakland's Barry Zito. But Minaya likes Jose Contreras, as well, and don't discount the possibility of Minaya working to pry Contreras from the White Sox.

For now, Oakland GM Billy Beane is telling suitors he is not interested in dealing Zito. But Zito is a free agent after the season, the A's are unlikely to be able to retain him, and Beane has shown a willingness to unload key players during the season even while his team is in contention.

Like Zito, Contreras is entering his walk year and plays for a GM, Kenny Williams, with as much of a wheeler-dealer gene as Beane or Minaya. The White Sox recently traded for Javier Vazquez (whom Minaya tried to obtain, as well) and re-signed potential free agent Jon Garland long-term. Mark Buehrle and Freddy Garcia also are locked up through next year. The quartet of Garland, Vazquez, Buehrle and Garcia are due $40 million in 2007, so the White Sox may not be budgeted to add at least another $10 million for Contreras, especially because they have a ready-now piece, well-regarded prospect Brandon McCarthy.

Konerko Doesn't Want 'C'

If the Chicago White Sox want to make him a captain, Paul Konerko has a message: No thanks.

Although he insisted he's "flattered" that White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has floated the idea of naming him captain of the World Series champions, the slugging first baseman made it clear Wednesday that he doesn't want a 'C' on his uniform.

"The way our team operates best, it seems to me, is everybody has an equal voice," Konerko said.

Konerko said he hasn't discussed the idea with Guillen or general manager Ken Williams. But if they insist, he'll go along.

"I don't know about the wearing-the-C thing," he said. "There's a difference in the uniform, and I don't know if I agree with that. It's singling out one person on our team. I don't want to offend everybody, but I think this team operates best when everybody is uniform and the same."

Big Hurt Agrees To Deal With Oakland

Free agent slugger Frank Thomas agreed to a one-year, $500,000 contract with Oakland on Wednesday, giving the Athletics the big bat they've been searching for in the middle of their lineup.

Thomas, a two-time American League MVP who has been slowed by injuries in recent years, can make an additional $2.6 million in bonuses based on plate appearances and not hurting his left foot. He played his first 16 seasons with the Chicago White Sox, who won their first World Series title since 1917 last season.

The low-budget A's have spent recent offseasons losing big-name players such as Jason Giambi, Miguel Tejada, Johnny Damon, Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder. But after missing the postseason for the second straight year following four consecutive trips to the playoffs, Oakland general manager Billy Beane has added Thomas and Milton Bradley to a lineup that struggled to score runs at times last season _ and done so without losing anyone of significance.

Contreras Won't Sign Long-Term Deal

The chances of signing Jose Contreras to a contract extension have all but "dried up" for the time being.

Two weeks ago, the Sox contacted Contreras' agent, Jaime Torres, and asked what it would take to get a multiyear deal done.

"Several weeks ago, we had a very candid conversation where we wanted them to get to a bottom line. They did that, and it wasn't realistic for us to do,'' Hahn said. "Contreras talks for right now are dried up.''

The two sides are believed to be apart on both length of contract and salary.

"We have Jose through 2006 and exclusivity to negotiate with him through Nov. 15 next season," Hahn said. "I suppose something could change and we could still get a deal done between now and then, but the nature of our conversations with Jaime were bottom line."
