Fukudome Is Leading Candidate To Hit Leadoff

Kosuke Fukudome is the leading candidate to hit first for the Cubs this season, according to manager Mike Quade.

He has a career .233 average as the leadoff man.

"I don't hate it," Fukudome said with a smile when asked about the slot.

Dempster To Start For Cubs On Opening Day

Ryan Dempster will start for the Cubs on Opening Day, breaking Carlos Zambrano's streak of six consecutive starts on the first day of the season.

Zambrano finished last season 8-0 in his final 11 starts, but he endured a tumultuous first half to the season that included a suspension and anger management therapy following a dugout confrontation with former teammate Derrek Lee.

Cardinals Don't Rule Out Pursuing Pujols

Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts did nothing to diffuse the idea that the team could pursue first baseman Albert Pujols if he hits the free agent market in 2012.

"All that stuff's in [general manager Jim Hendry's] court," Ricketts said. "There's going to be a little more financial flexibility at the end of the season than we've had in years past. We'll have to assess the situation when we get there and see what's available."

It's been reported that Pujols, 32, is looking for a 10-year, $300-million deal with the Cardinals.

Zambrano Vows To Stay Out Of Trouble

Cubs starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano is vowing to stay out of trouble this season.

"Yeah," he said when asked by the media if he would behave in 2011.

"I want to do more than in the field than what I talk. I don't want to talk this year. I don't want to say anything. I just want to talk with my numbers. That's what I want to do."

He guaranteed last spring that he would behave, but the words proved to be worthless.

"For real," he said at the time. "I am almost sure- 99.9 percent. When you're sure of something, you go ahead and do it- and execute it. Seriously."

Zambrano went bonkers after a first-inning meltdown against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on June 25, leading to a suspension, anger management counseling and a brief demotion to the bullpen.

The deal is believed to be in the $20 million range.
