Cubs To Honor Williams With Statue

The Cubs will honor Hall of Famer Billy Williams with a statue outside Wrigley Field.

It will be unveiled Sept. 7.

"It's one of the greatest tributes to a player," Williams said Wednesday. "When this happens, you're so elated because it's a statue erected in front of Wrigley Field where I've performed for so many years.

"It's a great honor. It's great for me, it's great for the family, because the kids, the grandkids, the great-great grandkids can go see it and take their friends, and it'll be there forever."

Cubs Opt For Vets Over Young Guns

Cubs manager Lou Piniella announced his starting rotation on Friday, opting to give the fourth and fifth spots to Tom Gorzelanny and Carlos Silva.

Piniella said he's not sure of the order of the rotation after Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster and Randy Wells.

Jeff Samardzija and Sean Marshall will go to the bullpen.

"The thing I'm happiest about is we sent nobody to the minor leagues," Piniella said. "They went from the rotation to the bullpen.

"Remember, when we set this competition up, we didn't know {Angel] Guzman would be out for a whole year and [Jeff] Gray would be hurt."

Derrek Lee Suffers Freak Injury From Broken Chair

Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee suffered a freak back injury on Wednesday when the chair he was sitting in broke.

"He was eating before the game and the chair just collapsed on him," manager Lou Piniella said. "That's why we got him out of there after three innings."

Piniella said Lee was fine and would be back in the starting lineup Friday.
