Aramis Ramirez Dodges DL

Aramis Ramirez, sidelined since coming out of last Friday's game in St. Louis with a strained left calf, underwent an MRI on Thursday. The test showed inflammation, but general manager Jim Hendry said the third baseman was expected to be back in action within a few days and did not need the full 15 days off.

Lou Piniella and athletic trainer Mark O'Neal watched Ramirez as he ran in the outfield prior to Thursday's game.

"He went through a fairly extensive array of stretching and running exercises, and he's much better than he was in Phoenix two days ago," Piniella said. "The feeling is, the next few days we can get him out there to play."

Cubs Bench Last Year's Rookie Of Year

The Cubs benched reigning National League Rookie of the Year Geovany Soto earlier this week.

Soto, the team's catcher, has been slumping to begin the season and is hitting just .119.

"All I can say is I'm here ready for whenever he needs me," said Soto, speaking of Chicago manager Lou Piniella.

The manager said that he's trying to give Soto a mental break.

"I don't think it has anything to do with the sophomore slump," Piniella said, "but sometimes with a young player, rather than battling it out, you get him out of there to relax, give him a little time to get himself together."

Soto was hoping to return to the lineup on Wednesday.
