Cubs Name Gregg Their Closer

Kevin Gregg has beat out Carlos Marmol for the right to close games for the Cubs this season.

"Gregg came in here and hasn't given up a run all spring," manager Lou Piniella said Sunday. "I think leaving spring training, we're a better team the way we've put this thing together."

Gregg and Marmol spent spring training vying to replace All-Star closer Kerry Wood, who signed with Cleveland during the offseason.

Marquis Holds No Grudge Against Cubs

Pitcher Jason Marquis, who the Cubs traded to the Rockies this offseason, claims that he holds no grudge against his former team.

"I have no regrets, no remorse, no hatred towards anybody," Marquis said.

Marquis, who said he wasn't surprised or upset by the trade, made no secret of being unhappy at times over how he was used during his two seasons under Cubs manager Lou Piniella.

"Am I allowed to show emotion? I think so," he said. "It doesn't mean I was going to give any less if I was coming out of the bullpen or if I wasn't. I was just upset at the decision (in the '07 playoffs). And I don't hold grudges. It was that spur-of-the-moment-type deal.

"We're all human beings. If something doesn't go your way, you have the right to be upset. Sometimes, whether it's the front office, your teammates, the manager, fans, they take it differently, like you're crying over it."

Zambrano: I'm Ready To 'Rock And Roll'

Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano is excited for the 2009 season to get under way, and claims that his right arm is ready to "rock and roll."

"I don't have to prove anything," Zambrano said. "I've been in the big leagues for eight years. They know what I'm capable of doing. Speaking of last year, it's already in the past. The numbers were there; they stay in the past. This is a new year and I have to put up good numbers. I have to help this team."

Zambrano has both pitched and hit extremely well this spring.

"I'm just waiting for the season to rock and roll," Zambrano said.
