Cubs Hold Players-Only Meeting After More Fundamental Breakdowns

The Cubs held a lengthy players-only meeting Wednesday, one day after a mistake-filled loss to the Marlins that manager Lou Piniella said "might be our worst game of the year."

Piniella and team executives held a long meeting of their own before Wednesday night's game against Florida. "Everybody's on the same page," Piniella said. "It has been a little bit frustrating. But everybody's on the same page and we just go forward."

Going forward may mean settling on a lineup. The Cubs have platoons in center and right field and at shortstop.

"I've tried my darnedest to play everybody," Piniella said. "It's getting to the point where we're going to have to get really set. I can't do it at every position. ... But just play the people who are getting the job done the best."

Miller's Time In Chicago Appears Over

After a disappointing rehab outing Saturday, it looks like this might be the end of the line for pitcher Wade Miller with the Cubs.

?He didn?t throw very well the other day,? said Cubs general manager Jim Hendry. ?His velocity wasn?t where it needed to be; I think it was 83, 84 (mph).

?I think he?d be the first to tell you, right now he?s not throwing well enough to attract a lot of attention.?

Hendry said if possible he?d like to help Miller catch on with another team.

Zambrano Says He Isn't Switching To Boras

Carlo Zambrano later denied a rumor he was switching from agent Barry Praver to Scott Boras, the superagent who represented Zambrano at the start of his career until a few years ago. He was seen talking to Boras before Friday's game, and because contract talks with the Cubs have been on hold since Opening Day, the rumors spread like wildfire Saturday.

"I was talking to him because he was nice to me," Zambrano said. "He was nice to me when I used to be with him. After I left him, he has been friendly with me. He's a good guy. I like to talk to him. Every time I talk to him, he gives me a few tips about baseball."
