Cubs May Shop Zambrano

The Cubs have held off on signing their ace Carlos Zambrano to a five-year deal for more than $80 million, a deal that Cubs general manager Jim Hendry had nearly completed with Zambrano's agent Barry Praver. Foxsports.com reported earlier this week that Zambrano would shortly pull back from his commitment to that contract and look ahead toward free agency this winter.

With no contract in sight, the Cubs could shop Zambrano.

Cardinals' Josh Hancock Killed In Car Crash

Josh Hancock, a key member of the bullpen that helped the Cardinals win the World Series last season, was killed in a car crash early Sunday.

The Cardinals said they were told of the 29-year-old reliever's death by the St. Louis Police Department. The team's home game against the Cubs on Sunday night was postponed. The team said the accident happened in St. Louis, but no other details were disclosed. The Cardinals and police are expected to make a statement this afternoon at Busch Stadium.

Prior's Future With Chicago Bleak?

General manager Jim Hendry said Dr. James Andrews told him Mark Prior "will still have a career" when he returns.

"It's certainly not career-ending," Hendry said. "[Andrews is] optimistic [Prior will] be able to pitch next year."

Because Prior was on the minor-league disabled list instead of the Cubs' disabled list at the time of the surgery, he will not accrue any major-league service time in 2007. That means he won't be eligible for free agency until after 2009, even if he returns for the entire 2008 season.

But the Cubs will have the option of non-tendering Prior instead of paying him another $3.4 million to $3.5 million in '08, as he likely would get in an arbitration hearing, based on his current $3.575 million salary.

Hendry declined to discuss Prior's future in the organization.

"You have to let the rehab process take place," Hendry said. "Obviously, we think a lot of Mark. ? Like always, you do everything in the best interests of the club. You make the decisions we have to make down the road."

Prior Out For Season After Shoulder Surgery

Manager Lou Piniella will not get any help from Mark Prior this season.

The injury-plagued righthander underwent shoulder surgery on Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season, the Cubs announced on Wednesday.

Dr. James Andrews performed a debridement of Prior's right rotator cuff and repaired labral and capsular injuries in the shoulder. Prior will begin a comprehensive rehabilitation program in Birmingham overseen by Andrews and the Cubs medical staff.

Cubs Coach Denies Challening Ump To Fight

There was a postgame incident after Monday's game involving Cubs' hitting coach Gerald Perry got into shouting match with umpires in the tunnel was the second confrontation between Cubs personnel and umpires in four days. A similar scene Friday featured manager Lou Piniella.

Major-league sources said a report written by umpiring crew chief Brian Gorman and sent to Major League Baseball on Tuesday included a claim that Perry had to be restrained from going after umpire Paul Nauert and had challenged him to a fight.

Perry denied both charges.

"No, it was just words," Perry said. "I said my piece, and that was it."

As for wanting to fight an umpire, Perry said: "I don't remember challenging an umpire to a fight. I would never do that."
