Pirates Claim Oscar Tejeda Off Waivers From Red Sox

The Pirates have claimed infielder/outfielder Oscar Tejeda off waivers from the Red Sox and have assigned him to Double-A Altoona.

Tejeda has been placed on the 40-man roster and LHP Doug Slaten has been designated for assignment.

The 22-year old Tejeda entered the 2012 season ranked by Baseball America as the second-best second base prospect in the Boston organization and the No. 24 prospect overall in the Red Sox system.

In 51 games with Double-A Portland this season, Tejeda hit .262 (53-for-202) with 15 doubles, five home runs and 31 RBI.

Tejada spent the 2011 season with Portland and led the club in at bats (457) while also ranking second in games (123), hits (114) and stolen bases (13).

Tejeda was originally signed by Boston as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2006.

Ellsbury To Begin Rehab On Friday

Jacoby Ellsbury is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Friday in Fort Myers, according to Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine.

Doing so would put him on pace to return to the team no later than July 18.

Ellsbury took batting practice on Tuesday, shagged fly balls and played catch.

He appeared in seven games before going on the disabled list with a partially dislocated shoulder on April 14.

Clay Buchholz Has Esophagitis

Clay Buchholz was hospitalized with what the Red Sox have revealed was esophagitis, an inflammation that damages tissues of the esophagus.

According to a message on Twitter late Tuesday night from his wife, Lindsay Clubine, Buchholz is being released from Massachusetts General Hospital.

"Clay finally gets to come home!" Clubine tweeted. "Stomach issues are under control & he feels good. Now we just have to fatten him up! Thanks for the prayers!"

According to a major league source, the club is concerned about a tear "near the esophagus," and the possibility of infection.

Buchholz is not expected back until after the All-Star break, the source said.

Obama's Youkilis Ribbing Earns Boston Boos

Barack Obama jokingly thanked the city of Boston for trading Kevin Youkilis to the White Sox during a campaign speech on Monday.

"Boston, I just want to say thank you for Youkilis," Obama told the audience at Symphony Hall.

The crowd began booing, in a loud but seemingly good-natured matter.

"I'm just saying, he had to change the color of his socks," Obama said with a chuckle.

The president is a known White Sox fan. Chicago acquired Youkilis from Boston in a trade on Sunday afternoon.

Buchholz Hospitalized, Placed On DL

Clay Buchholz has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with what manager Bobby Valentine called "a gastrointestinal situation."

The Red Sox right-hander has been hospitalized and needs 10-14 days to recover from intestinal bleeding.

"We're hoping that we get him back at the end of the 15 days," Valentine said.
