Pedroia Leaves Game With Jammed Thumb

The Red Sox don't expect to have Dustin Pedroia on Tuesday after he left Monday's contest with a jammed thumb.

"Right now, I don't think he'll play tomorrow," manager Bobby Valentine said. "You could tell there's something there."

Pedroia had X-rays and is scheduled to be checked again by the Red Sox medical staff after the swelling goes down.

A source said that it was unclear when the injury occurred. The team is attempting to schedule an MRI for Pedroia on Tuesday.

Teams Turned Off By Oswalt's Asking Price

Roy Oswalt has thrown for the Phillies, Rangers, Red Sox and at least one other team this month.

However, the free-agent remains unsigned as June approaches.

Major League executives claim that teams have been turned off by the right-hander's asking price.

The Dodgers checked in and considered the price "excessive."

One source said Oswalt wants a pro-rated $7.5 million in base salary. Another said that Oswalt's desired salary is a moving target, "but always high."

Valentine Fires Back At Maddon, Rays

Bobby Valentine fired back at Rays manager Joe Maddon for criticizing his staff for their role in Friday night's bench-clearing scrum at Fenway Park.

Valentine said Rays coaches aggravated the situation and acted unprofessional and immature. "I thought their coaches were really aggressive," Valentine said.

"As a matter of fact, I took offense to the aggressiveness of their coaches. I thought it was very unprofessional and I really was proud of the way my coaches were trying to do what they were supposed to do in those situations. [Tampa's coaches] seemed very immature and out of control."

Friday's altercation began in the top of the ninth inning after Red Sox reliever Franklin Morales drilled Rays batter Luke Scott.

No one was ejected but the respective coaching staffs went at each other during the massive shoving and screaming match near home plate.

Benches Clear As Rays Defeat Red Sox

Benches cleared in the ninth inning of Tampa Bay's 7-4 win over Boston on Friday night.

The battle ensued after Red Sox reliever Franklin Morales threw behind Rays designated hitter Luke Scott with the first pitch of an at-bat and hit him in the hip area on a 3-1 count.

Scott was restrained by catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and the benches and bullpens emptied.

There was a lot of pushing and shoving along the first-base line that carried over behind home plate before order was restored.

"That's truly somebody flexing their muscles on the other side and they need to put them in their back pocket and understand they can hurt their own team for something like that," said Rays manager Joe Maddon, who believes Boston was upset with Tampa Bay's three home runs.

"To be really carelessly incompetent on their side and truly try to hit someone and throw behind somebody and hitting them in the leg for all the wrong reasons, eventually they can get their own guys hurt. That was ridiculous. It was absurd, idiotic. I'll use all those words.

"Our guys got it. We had every reason to be totally into the push-back right there. We didn't start anything. We don't start stuff. We'll finish stuff, but we don't start it."

Gonzalez Plays Outfield, Keeping Middlebrooks In Lineup

The Red Sox had several lineup decisions to make after activating Kevin Youkilis from the disabled list on Tuesday.

Adrian Gonzalez played right field, while Youkilis manned first base. That allowed hot rookie Will Middlebrooks to remain in the lineup at third.

David Ortiz maintained his customary designated hitter role.

Under ordinary circumstances, Middlebrooks might have been sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket, despite how well he performed while Youkilis was absent.

"It's a compounded situation," Bobby Valentine said. "It's just not that Will's hitting well; there's this void in the outfield. And it seems like the situation presented what at least today's solution is about."
