Red Sox Have To Make Decision On Cook

If the Red Sox don't call up Aaron Cook by Tuesday, the veteran right-hander can trigger an opt-out clause in his minor league contract.

His salary will increase to $1.5 million if he's on the Major League roster.

If he informs the Red Sox that he plans to opt out, the team would have 48 hours to placate him or allow him to become a free agent.

Ortiz Matches Rice On Home Run List

David Ortiz hit his 382nd career home run on Friday night, tying Jim Rice and Frank Howard for 59th place all-time.

Ortiz is batting .425 (31-for-73) and slugging .699 with a .476 on-base percentage this season. He's 11-for-25 (.440) against left-handed pitchers.

"He's swinging the bat very well," manager Bobby Valentine said. "He's playing with a great deal of confidence and enjoying what he's doing. He's not doing one thing. We talked about hitting the ball to left field. (Last night), he hit the ball to right. We talked about hitting the slider. He hit the fastball. He's just locked in."

Humber Struggles In First Start Since Perfect Game

The Red Sox roughed up Philip Humber en route to a 10-3 win over the White Sox on Thursday night.

It was Humber's first start since his surprising perfect game against the Mariners last Saturday.

"I got a lot of pitches up over the plate," Humber said. "To a team like that, they make you pay for it."

Humber was tagged for a career-high nine runs and eight hits in five innings. The nine earned runs he allowed after his perfect game were a record, topping the eight given up by Jim "Catfish" Hunter after his perfecto for Oakland in 1968.

Crawford Has Sprained UCL, To Miss Three Months

Carl Crawford has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his left (throwing) elbow, an injury that often results in Tommy John surgery.

Rather than opt for surgery, the Red Sox said the outfielder will follow a protocol of more conservative treatment.

"It is what it is what it is," Bobby Valentine said.

"We'll just let Mother Nature take the time to heal him up and get him back. I don't know how to explain it or put it into my thought. I wish he was 100 percent. Not playing for awhile is going to kill him more than it's killing me."

A major league source told ESPN's Pedro Gomez that Crawford is expected to miss three months.

Valentine Files Wrong Lineup After Researching On Cell Phone

Bobby Valentine initially filed the wrong lineup for Boston's game against Minnesota on Wednesday night after he researched Twins pitcher Liam Hendriks on his cell phone.

He posted the lineup close to four hours before the game, but corrected it a few minutes later when Jarrod Saltalamacchia noticed some mistakes.

Valentine finally realized that Hendriks pitched with his right hand -- and not his left.

"I looked on this thing," Valentine said, gesturing to his cellphone, "and there was no history on him. It had his name, and 'against left-handed hitting.' My fault. That's why you make these lineups out early enough."

"It was kind of funny," the manager said of Saltalamacchia.

"I talked to him yesterday about him not playing, and I thought I alluded to the fact that he could get two days in a row with a left-hander (Wednesday). So I kind of locked into right, right, left."
