Red Sox Still Want To Discuss Epstein Compensation With Cubs

The Red Sox are not ready to end talks with the Cubs over compensation for executive Theo Epstein.

Boston allowed Epstein to leave, despite being under contract, as their general manager to become Chicago's president this offseason.

Chris Carpenter, a right-handed reliever received as part of the compensation, had surgery on his elbow Thursday.

The club is weighing their options about what to do next, said a Red Sox source.

Lackey Apologizes For Insensitive Remark

John Lackey issued a statement Tuesday apologizing for a remark he made that was part of a column in Tuesday's Boston Globe.

Lackey used the word "retarded" in response to being questioned about the behavior of pitchers in the Red Sox clubhouse last season.

"I apologize for my thoughtless choice of words that appeared in print earlier today. I meant no harm, and I am sorry to all I offended," the statement read.

Reports came out following the season of pitchers drinking beer in the clubhouse during games. Boston went 7-20 in September and missed the playoffs by one game.

"Guys having a beer after their start has been going on for the last 100 years. This is retarded," Lackey was quoted as saying.

Valentine: No Rift With GM Cherington

New Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine on Monday dismissed reports of a potential rift between him and GM Ben Cherington on roster decisions, calling it "lazy journalism."

"It's an easy story to write, that has no validity to it," Valentine said before his Red Sox took on the Phillies. "I could have written that Dec. 3.''

"I still need to let the legal process run its course and until it does, I will not be able to make any further comment."

Jenks was arrested early Friday morning and charged with five misdemeanors, including driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash involving damage to property, according to Lee County police.
