Red Sox Hope Cuban Defector Becomes Long Term SS Solution

Since Nomar Garciaparra was traded, Boston has had a revolving door at shortstop.

But Jose Iglesias, a defector from Cuba some 15 months ago who signed an $8.2 million contract with the Red Sox last summer, could become their long term solution.

?What jumps out are his raw athleticism and the instincts for the game,? Red Sox director of player development Mike Hazen said. ?He?s maybe not polished yet. I don?t know what his coaching was like (in Cuba), and there probably were some nuances -- basestealing, selectivity at the plate -- that need work. But his natural instincts are incredible.?

Jason Bay Dismisses West Coast Rumors

Jason Bay continues to maintain a home in Seattle, but laughed off the notion that he might be more interested in playing on the West Coast.

"The window for my career doesn't last forever, so limiting myself to one geographical spot really has no bearing on my decision," said Bay.

Chapman Meets With Red Sox At Fenway

Aroldis Chapman, the 21-year-old Cuban lefthander, was at Fenway Park on Wednesday and came away impressed with the Red Sox.

?Boston was one of the teams he was interested in from the start, and that certainly hasn?t changed,?? said Chapman?s agent, Edwin Mejia. ?It was a very good visit.??

General manager Theo Epstein declined to comment on Chapman. But Mejia confirmed that he and his client met with members of the baseball operations staff and a player, although he declined to identify which one.

Chapman was expected to throw for the Red Sox, although inclement weather may have pushed that back.

?This is a player who I believe is a special talent, and we?re trying to find the right place for him,?? Mejia said. ?That means the team, the city, even the fans. Aroldis is interested in every aspect.??
