Red Sox Clinch AL East Title

The 12-year wait for the Red Sox is over. At last, they're the AL East champions.

Moments after the Orioles beat the Yankees, completing Boston's clinch, Red Sox players popped champagne corks in their clubhouse while thousands of fans jumped at their seats, the echoes of their cheers spreading through the stadium.

"I pulled my hamstring jumping off the couch," manager Terry Francona said.

More than an hour earlier, Boston reduced its magic number to one with a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.

And with those results, coupled with Cleveland's 5-3 win over Kansas City, the AL playoff pairings were set: The Angels will open at Boston, and the wild-card Yankees will start at Cleveland.

Buchholz Season Over Because Of Shoulder Fatigue

Red Sox rookie Clay Buchholz won't pitch for the rest of the year and will miss the postseason because of shoulder fatigue.

The 23-year-old right-hander pitched a no-hitter against Baltimore on Sept. 1 in his second major league start, then was sent to the bullpen and made a relief appearance on Sept. 6. He had just one outing after that, starting and losing at Toronto on Sept. 19.

Lester Likely To Be Left Out Of Boston's Playoff Rotation

Jon Lester took the mound last night for the Red Sox in an 11-6 win over the Oakland A's. The start will likely end up being Lester's last of the 2007 season.

The Fenway Park crowd of 36,570 knew Lester's feel-good story would have had a more fitting epilogue in the playoffs, but after the 23-year-old lefthander lasted just 4 1/3 innings, it was abundantly clear he is likely the odd man out of the Sox' four-man postseason rotation.

"There were a lot of ups and downs this year," said Lester, taking stock of a season in which he was unbeaten (4-0, 4.72 ERA) in 11 appearances. "It seems that I couldn't really string too many starts together where I had good performances. I'm glad to be up here with these guys and, hopefully, I can keep on going. We'll see where we go."
