The Athletics got some relief for their injury-depleted outfield Sunday, acquiring Ryan Langerhans in a trade with the Braves for a player to be named or cash.
Langerhans will join the A's in Boston on Tuesday and is slated to start in center field for the opener of the two-game series with the Red Sox.
"He plays all three outfield positions, and given our situation with all the injuries, we need as many healthy bodies as we can get," A's GM Billy Beane said. "He's a player we've liked in the past. He's off to a rough start in Atlanta and he became available to us."

The Yankees lost another starting pitcher Saturday, two batters into their game against Boston.
Jeff Karstens was hit in the knee by Julio Lugo's line drive on his first pitch, then came out after giving up a single to Kevin Youkilis. The right-hander was replaced by Kei Igawa, relegated to the bullpen after flopping in his most recent start Monday night against Tampa Bay.
It was the latest injury to New York's depleted staff. Already missing starters Mike Mussina (hamstring) and Carl Pavano (forearm), the struggling Yankees sent Karstens to the mound hoping he could help end a seven-game skid -- their longest since the last week of the 2000 season.

At this rate, the Red Sox will blow the Yankees out of the AL East race before summer.
Daisuke Matsuzaka overcame control problems to defeat the Yankees for the second time in six days, and Kevin Youkilis and Julio Lugo homered. With a come-from-behind 11-4 victory over Andy Pettitte on Friday night, Boston improved to 4-0 against its longtime rival this season.
"Things can turn around at a moment's notice," said Kevin Youkilis, whose two-run homer started Boston's outburst. "We can't really worry about what they're doing. We have to do what we do best and hope that we keep winning."
