Francona Returns To Fenway Park

For the first time as an opposing manager, Terry Francona will walk into Fenway Park to face the Red Sox, the team he led to two World Series titles during eight seasons.

Francona said he hasn't given much thought to his homecoming, but he's certain it will conjure up some memories.

Red Sox Disappointed By Ellsbury's Production

The assumption was that Jacoby Ellsbury would return to MVP-caliber form this season with free agency approaching.

Ellsbury is batting .241 with a .303 on-base percentage. He has only one home run and it came on April 7 in Toronto.

He leads the league with 13 stolen bases and the majors with 208 plate appearances, but also has produced 147 outs, most in the majors.

"I wouldn't say he's pressing," John Farrell said. "How do you differentiate pressing and frustrated? Because it feels like he's gotten pitches that he hasn't squared up. He's just missed them, so there's a little frustration. I wouldn't say he's pressing to the point of something's ticking on him, time is ticking. No. He's a good player, and we've got to get him back to that level."

Ortiz: Slump Due To Injury, Not Boston Globe Story

David Ortiz says a sore oblique muscle, not a controversial story in the Boston Globe, sent him into a slump last week.

Ortiz has been dealing with tightness in his left oblique muscle since he hurt it swinging the bat in Texas on the first weekend of May. Ortiz entered Tuesday night's game with just one hit in his previous 20 at-bats, but hit a three-run home run in the first inning.

"I'm going to keep on playing," he said. "It's not at the point where it's getting worse. Hopefully it won't get any worse. It bothers me on some swings that I take. Last week I was watching some videos of outside pitches I was kind of pulling. When you get to the point where you want to drive the ball the other way and the next thing you know, you're hooking the ball, that's not normal."

Ortiz said that a Boston Globe column suggesting he was suspected of using steroids had not distracted him into a slump. "Not really," he said, though he has expressed anger at columnist Dan Shaughnessy.

Victorino's Ribs Check Out OK, Cleared To Play

Shane Victorino has been cleared to play by the Boston Red Sox after tests on his ribs at Massachusetts General Hospital came back negative.

Victorino was sent to the hospital Sunday after slamming hard into the right-field wall against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Initially, Victorino said he planned to play on Tuesday but that was before he woke up Monday with soreness.
