Rangers infielder Andres Blanco got into a verbal spat with Orioles third baseman Ty Wigginton following a collision at third base in the sixth inning of Thursday's 4-0 O's win.
The incident started when Blanco doubled over the head of right fielder Nick Markakis and tried to stretch it to a triple.
"It's just part of the game, trying to get the extra base," said Blanco.
Markakis made a relay throw to second baseman Brian Roberts, who pivoted and threw to Wigginton at third. Blanco took a hard slide into the bag, pushing Wigginton, who was down on one knee, over after the out was made.
Wigginton held up the ball, and home-plate umpire Tim McClelland called him out. Blanco took exception, not to the call, but to Wigginton dropping his knee and blocking the bag, and started yelling at the infielder, who shouted right back.
"I just said, 'You're out,' " Wigginton said of the war of words, which included him pointing to the visitors' dugout to tell the Blanco to go back to the bench.
"I guess he wasn't happy with the play."
The Orioles agreed to terms with first-round pick shortstop Manny Machado with three minutes to go before Monday night's midnight deadline.
Machado, the third pick overall in June's amateur draft, will receive, pending a physical, a $5.25 million bonus, the second-largest in Orioles history, according to a source.
Matt Wieters, who is also represented by agent Scott Boras, signed for $6 million as the fifth overall pick in 2007.
Orioles outfielder Luke Scott was claimed on waivers earlier this month, but the team pulled him back, according to FOX Sports.
If Scott had cleared waivers, Baltimore could have shopped him to the 29 other clubs.
He is hitting .365 with five home runs and 11 RBIs in 13 games this month.
Orioles pitching prospect Zach Britton has done well with Triple-A Norfolk since being promoted earlier this season.
Britton has made seven starts for the Tides, going 1-2 with a 3.57 ERA. In 35 1/3 innings, he has struck out 24 batters and walked twelve (2-to-1 ratio).
He has surrendered 14 earned runs, but just one home run in the International League. Opposing batters are hitting .273 against the left-hander.
Britton's worst performance came Sunday (Aug. 8) when he allowed five runs over just 3 2/3 innings at Louisville.
The Orioles placed left-hander reliever Mike Gonzalez on waivers Tuesday, according to a major league source.
If he's available, Gonzalez will likely be another candidate for Boston's bullpen.
The Red Sox are still looking to add to their bullpen, with a left-hander being one of their priorities.
