Orioles Name Hernandez No. 5 Starter

The Orioles have awarded the fifth spot in their starting rotation to right-hander David Hernandez.

Hernandez defeated Chris Tillman, who will be sent to the minor leagues, for the spot.

He is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA, three walks and 20 strikeouts this spring.

"I knew it was going to be a competition going into spring training," Hernandez said. "I wanted to have fun, be more relaxed than I was last year and it paid off. I was able to do well enough in the eyes of the coaches."

O's Roberts To Make Spring Debut

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts will make his spring debut for the team on Friday.

Roberts has had a rocky road in recovering from a herniated disc in his lower back.

Baltimore hopes for him to play five innings and get three at-bats against Minnesota.

"I don't really know what has helped and what hasn't," said Roberts.

"I know it feels better. I feel better than I did 10 days ago. There's things that still feel the exact same, but things that feel a little better. So as long as [the epidural] helped me hit, that's all that really matters."

Brian Roberts To See Back Specialist

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts will see a back specialist on Monday.

He'll return to Baltimore for the appointment after missing spring games with the injury.

"I'm just going there to see a back doctor and just make sure we're progressing in a way we need to be and if we need to ramp it up and do anything else, then we will," Roberts said Sunday.

"It's gone a while," he added. "We'd like to get over the hump a little bit."
