Tejada's Transition To Third Won't Be Easy

Miguel Tejada has agreed to play third base upon his return to the Orioles, but the transition won't be an easy one.

For 13 seasons, Tejada has held strong in his belief that he's a shortstop.

"I think if you play shortstop in the big leagues for 10 years, you will adapt," said Baltimore second baseman Brian Roberts.

"It's certainly not going to be easy, and it's not going to be overnight that he's going to turn into the best third baseman ever. But he has the ability, the arm strength certainly. It's a matter of getting over there, getting the repetitions and getting comfortable."

The process will begin next month in Sarasota, Fla. when Tejada reports to Spring Training.

"It's going to take a lot of work for him to get used to that position," said Juan Samuel, the Orioles third base and infield coach.

"It's a reaction position, a quick position. We know he's got the arm strength to play that position. We have to see how things transpire in spring training. That's why they call it the hot corner so we'll maybe have him play a little bit deeper."

Tejada Headed Back To Baltimore

An Orioles official familiar with the decision says the team has agreed on a 1-year deal worth approximately $6 million to bring back Miguel Tejada, who played with the club from 2004 through 2007.

The person spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract hinges on Tejada passing a physical, which has not yet been given.

Luke Scott Doesn't Want To DH Full Time

Luke Scott will primarily be Baltimore's designated hitter, but he doesn't want to leave left field behind completely.

"Absolutely, I want to be able to play defense," said Scott, who avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $4.05 million deal with the Orioles. "If it were up to me, I'd DH two or three times a week and play in the field wherever they needed me. That would be optimal. I'd be off my feet some and stay fresher longer. I'd play left field and first base and DH. That'd be great."
