Orioles Release Gibbons, Eat $11.9M Of His Contract

Jay Gibbons was released Sunday by the Orioles, who lost patience waiting for the outfielder to regain the form that enabled him to hit 26 home runs in 2005, according to an Associated Press report.

Gibbons batted .189 with no homers and four RBIs in 16 games this spring training after playing in only 84 games last season. Baltimore owes him $11.9M for the next two seasons as part of a $21.1M, four-year deal he agreed to in January 2006.

MacPhail: O's Not Dealing Roberts To Cubs

Andy MacPhail said on Wednesday that he is not close to dealing second baseman Brian Roberts to the Cubs and that Roberts will begin the season in the team's infield, according to the Associated Press.

"I've mentioned to Brian that I think it's unlikely that something happens," said MacPhail, the Baltimore Orioles president of baseball operations.

"I think with each passing hour, at this point, it's less and less likely. ... The further we get this close into [the regular season], the greater likelihood that we're going to start with what we have," MacPhail said.
