Hudson Hopes To Return In May

After having back surgery that he had long hoped to avoid, Tim Hudson reported to Spring Training this weekend feeling some relief.

"I definitely feel like I'm getting around a lot better," Hudson said. "I felt like Fred Sanford for two or three years walking around the locker room."

The right-hander will likely miss at least the first month of this season as he continues to recover from a Nov. 28 surgical procedure that fused the L5/S1 disk in his back.

"From a strength standpoint, I'm not quite where I want to be, but I usually get that back pretty quick," Hudson said.

While he was telling friends that he did not believe he would be ready for the start of the season, the Braves initially said he could recover from the surgery and be ready for the start of Spring Training.

"Me getting back for the start of the season was never really a possibility, just from a timeline standpoint," Hudson said. "The kind of surgery I had is a three-to-sixth-month deal. Five months puts me at May 1."

Shoulder Injury Led To Heyward's Swing Issues

It appears as though 2011 was a lost year for Jason Heyward, who had a shoulder injury that first popped up the year before.

He compensated because of the injury and produced ground balls at an alarming rate.

Heyward remained patient at the plate, but the swing change meant he wasn't driving balls as often as he did in his rookie season.

Hanson Adjusts Pitching Motion

Tommy Hanson has adjusted his pitching motion in hopes of reducing the stress on his body and avoiding injury.

"It's not drastic, but it's definitely different," Hanson said.

Hanson has simply focused on removing the momentary pause that had previously created a snapping-like motion in his delivery. The adjustment should lessen the stress placed on his right shoulder.

"I'm really just cutting out that pause," Hanson said. "I felt like I was throwing with all arm. Also, by changing, I could kill two birds with one stone as far as cutting down the running game. Somebody gets on and they have just run all day. I think it's going to help both."

Hanson entered this offseason with some uncertainty surrounding his right shoulder. He had battled discomfort dating back to the 2010 season and missed the final two months of the 2011 season.

Braves Unveil Alternate Uniform For Weekends

The Braves have unveiled a new alternate home uniform that is based on the attire worn when the team moved from Milwaukee in 1966.

"It's a beautiful uniform," Hall of Famer Hank Aaron said. "And it's not wool. Those first uniforms were wool."

The cream-colored uniforms feature the customary Braves script across the front, but without the tomahawk that is below the nickname on the regular home white jerseys.

Chipper Jones, Dan Uggla and Brian McCann were on hand to model the uniforms.

"I love it," Jones said. "You have to keep things fresh. Everyone gets excited when they break out something new."

The new uniforms will be worn during weekend games at Turner Field.

The alternate red jersey that had been worn on Sundays since 2005 will now be used for Friday night games in Atlanta. The regular home whites will be reserved for games Monday through Thursday.
