The Braves don't plan to offer pitcher John Smoltz arbitration by Monday's deadline as they wait to see how he heals from shoulder surgery in June.
If Atlanta did offer arbitration, and Smoltz accepted, he would position himself to make at least 80 percent of his 2008 salary ($14 million).

Some teams could look to sign players with a history of injury to an incentive-laden deal to lower the risk of spending a ton of money this offseason.
John Smoltz and Tom Glavine, respectively 40 and 43 in March, pitched merely 28 and 63 1/3 innings in 2008.
They will undoubtedly be injury risks for any interested team, but incentives - for something like making 20 starts - could help suitors calculate the risk.

The Braves have pulled out of the Jake Peavy sweepstakes and have turned their attention to free-agent pitcher A.J. Burnett.
Burnett's agent says that the Braves are among six teams "fully engaged" in negotiations for the pitcher.
"They're right in the mix," agent Darek Braunecker, said of the Braves, who appeal to Burnett in part because he thinks he could thrive in a return to the NL.
"It's a place he?s always enjoyed," Braunecker said. "He loves Bobby Cox, respects the hell out of him, and he?s pretty close with Chipper [Jones]. He knows what they have, what opportunities they have [to improve]."
