Smoltz Prefers Atlanta

Despite the Braves languishing in the unfamiliar confines of the NL East basement, John Smoltz says he doesn't want to leave Atlanta. "I am perfectly happy here," Smoltz said yesterday. "I expect to be here, in this uniform and playing hard as I can."

Smoltz created a firestorm recently when he was asked if he would ever consider waiving his no-trade rights as a 10-and-5 player.

"The question was posed if we fall out of race, would I entertain it, and my simple answer was yes," said Smoltz, who is slated to start tomorrow against the Yankees. "Where they got all this other stuff, I don't know. ... They took it in five different directions.

Rocker Calls Sensitivity Training "A Farce"

Controversial former MLB pitcher John Rocker referred to the sensitivity training process as "a farce" in an article published by the Chicago Tribune.

Rocker had been ordered by commissioner Bud Selig to undergo sensitivity training in 2000 after making racist and homophobic remarks to Sports Illustrated.

Rocker's comments came soon after White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was ordered to undergo sensitivity training for defamatory remarks against Sun-Times reporter Jay Mariotti.

Remlinger Designated For Assignment

Mike Remlinger was designated for assignment after Saturday night's game at Tampa Bay.

"You've been around here long enough, you get a feel for something's gotta give, but you never really want to fully believe that it's you," Remlinger said as he emptied his locker. "I'm at that point where if someone else is interested and it fits for my desires and my family's needs, then I'll consider it. If this is the end of the road, then I'm in a lot better place handling it than I was last year at this time. You get to the point where you start to realize that ability-wise, day in and day out, it's not what you expect. There's been stretches where it's been good and stretches where it hasn't been.

"And for what this team's going through right now, they've got other needs they need to address."
