Flash Gordon Close To Deal With D-Backs

Reliever Tom Gordon is reportedly close to a deal with the Diamondbacks that would finalize his departure from the world champion Phillies.

Philadelphia declined to exercise their option on Gordon after three injury-plagued seasons.

"We've had a number of conversations and we're getting close," Gordon's agent, Rick Thurman, told the Arizona Republic.

Garland Agrees To Terms With Arizona

The Diamondbacks and free agent right-hander Jon Garland have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with an option for 2010, according to major league sources.

It appears the contract is similar to one of the proposals the sides discussed two weeks ago, in which the deal would include an option that could be exercised by either the player or team. The value of the buyout would change depending on which side declines the option.

Garland's guaranteed money is believed to be in the $6 million to $8 million range.

RealGM Note: Garland was ranked 125th in season FIC during the 2008 season and 'deserved' a salary of $7.5M, giving him a Reina Value of -38%.

D-Backs Fire Mascot After Learning Of 'Extreme' DUI Arrest

The Diamondbacks have fired the man who played their team mascot, D. Baxter the Bobcat, after he was arrested on suspicion of extreme DUI.

David Hamilton, 35, was fired by the Diamondbacks three weeks ago. The club said it only recently learned of Hamilton's arrest, which took place in September.

"After concluding our own investigation and gathering the facts involved, we felt it was necessary to take corrective action," Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall said. "We will pursue a replacement for the mascot that is such a large part of our fan experience immediately."
