D-Backs Make Offer To Vazquez

The Diamondbacks have reportedly made an offer to free-agent infielder Ramon Vazquez, according to a Major League source.

Vazquez, 32, has been one of the club's top targets after he hit .290 for the Rangers in 2008.

"I think we're making progress," GM Josh Byrnes said. "In the offseason, sometimes that means getting close to something that you think could work, or it can also be a process of elimination where you find out things that are not going to work."

D-Backs Looking At Ramon Vazquez

The Diamondbacks are reportedly interested in filling their vacancy at second base with Ramon Vazquez.

Vazquez, 32, is a free agent after spending the last two seasons with the Rangers.

He batted .290 with 18 doubles, six homers, and 40 RBIs in 300 at-bats last season.

Big Unit Looking Elsewhere

Randy Johnson and the Diamondbacks were unable to reach a deal, and through a statement from his representatives, he made it all but clear that he will be pitching elsewhere in 2009.

The following is the statement from his Octagon representatives:

'At Randy?s request, we traveled to Phoenix on Monday to meet with Josh Byrnes and Jeff Moorad to explore every option for Randy to remain a Diamondback in 2009 and for the remainder of his career.

'Randy instructed us not to file for free agency until we made every effort to reach an agreement. The Diamondbacks have a budget based on their club?s financial situation and obviously viewed Randy?s contract in that context. Randy considered every reasonable compromise including offering to take a 50 [percent[ pay cut, all to remain a Diamondback. However, the economic situation did not lend itself to an agreement.

'Consequently, Randy is forced to file for free agency and consider all opportunities to further his career. He hopes to find a team where he can continue to pitch at a high level and contribute to another World Championship.

'Randy and his family live in Arizona and he will always be a Diamondback at heart. Most of all, Randy will miss the overwhelming support the fans have shown him throughout the years. He wishes the Diamondbacks great success in 2009 and beyond.'
