D'Backs Could Land Eckstein

Toronto general manager J.P. Ricciardi has confirmed rumors that the team is talking to Arizona about a deal involving shortstop David Eckstein, according to MLB.com.

Talks with the Angels appear to have broken down, but Eckstein could still be out of Toronto by Tuesday.

"We're talking to them," Ricciardi said of non-specific trade discussions with the Diamondbacks.

"David is one of my favorite guys on this team," manager Cito Gaston said. "You're talking about a guy that's just absolutely been great here with me and I haven't been able to play him as much as I'd like to. David has always, whatever you've asked him to do, he will go and do it for you. He's a class act."

If Arizona wants to have Eckstein on their postseason roster, they'll have to land him by midnight on Sunday (EST).

Dodgers Lose Eighth Straight, 4.5 Games Back

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost their eight-straight game on Friday night against the Diamondbacks, and have fallen 4.5 games back of Arizona in the NL West, according to Associated Press.

"We need to find a way to get this stuff straightened out," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "There's still plenty of time left. Right now, the last couple of weeks have been ugly."

The Dodgers were swept by the Phillies in a four-game series and lost three-straight to the Nationals before the opener against the Diamondbacks on Friday night.

Two weeks ago the Dodgers were just one game out of first place in the division.

Melvin Opts To Stick With Lyon As Closer

Diamondbacks' Manager Bob Melvin has decided to stick with Brandon Lyon as the team's closer, according to Arizona Republic.

Lyon has given up ten earned runs in his past 5 1/3 innings, but none of the damage has come in a save situation. None of his rough outings have directly cost Arizona a game, either.

His ERA has shot up to 4.96, but Lyon is 25 for 30 in save situations this season and at one point had a 25-inning scoreless streak.

"I think he's earned the right to go out there in a save situation, if indeed he was to lose his job for a period of time," Melvin said.
