Doug Davis Diagnosed With Thyroid Cancer

Diamondbacks' left-hander Doug Davis has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, according to the Arizona Republic.

He is expected to make his next few starts before undergoing surgery to remove the cancerous lump on April 10.

"It's something I know I'll be able to fight through," Davis said. "I know I'm young enough and strong enough to make a full recovery. I'm not putting a date on the return back, but it has been done in a month and a month and a half, and I hope I'll be starting for the D-Backs then."

Randy Johnson To Start Season On DL

Randy Johnson will start the season on the disabled list of the Diamondbacks, according to the East Valley Tribune.

His next start will be made for the Triple-A Tucson Sidewinders at their season opener.

"I like goofing around. I like tinkering with pitches. I?m just trying to re-invent the wheel," Johnson said.

"I might be able to take more velocity off with the changeup. If I?m topping out at 93 (mph) and I could throw a changeup at 72 miles an hour, that?s a 21-mile an hour variance, which is what you want."

Big Unit Pain Free In First Spring Outing

Randy Johnson was happy to pitch without pain. Still, he was disappointed with the results of his first outing since back surgery, as reported by the Associated Press.

Johnson gave up three runs and four hits, including a three-run homer by Chris Iannetta, in 1 1-3 innings Monday during the D'Backs 10-9 victory over the Rockies. Johnson walked one and struck out one.
