According to a source, trade talks that would bring Jermaine Dye to Boston are dead.
Dye never was formally approached for his permission to approve a deal.
It is still possible that Dye could be traded before the non-waiver deadline at 4 p.m. ET. The Cubs, Diamondbacks and Angels could be possibilities.

The Mets and Diamondbacks are bidding for Nationals closer Chad Cordero, whose name keeps popping up in trade talks as the 4 p.m. EDT nonwaiver deadline approaches.
The Mets offered fine pitching prospect Phil Humber for Cordero but have been firm to this point that they will not surrender any of their top four prospects: outfielders Carlos Gomez, Fernando Martinez and Lastings Milledge, and pitcher Mike Pelfrey.
Cordero was originally drafted by Mets GM Omar Minaya. The Mets tried to get Eric Gagne earlier but appear to be targeting Cordero now.

The Mets - concerned about their pitching - have inquired about Arizona's Livan Hernandez. Whether he's an upgrade is debatable, but Diamondbacks scout Rico Brogna, an ex-Met, was at Shea yesterday. El Duque's half-brother is making $7 million, so the Mets likely could afford to wait until August, let him clear waivers and defer a decision.
