Bonds Hits 742nd Career Home Run, But Hairston Gives D-Backs Win

Arizona manager Bob Melvin said he wanted to "crawl into a hole" when he pitched to Barry Bonds with first base open and Bonds hit a two-run homer, the 742nd of his career.

Scott Hairston bailed his manager out. Hairston hit a three-run pinch-hit homer to lead the D-Backs to a 5-4 victory over the Giants on Saturday night.

Hairston hit reliever Vinnie Chulk's first pitch 418 feet into the left-field seats with two runners on to give the D-Backs a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning.

It was the 14th homer of Hairston career, leaving him just 728 shy of Bonds. Hairston homered for the first time since 2004.

Peavy Falls One 'K' Shy Of Joining Seaver In Record Book

Even as he mowed down the Diamondbacks, Jake Peavy had no idea he needed one strike to tie Tom Seaver's MLB record of 10 consecutive strikeouts.

"I knew I struck out quite a few in a row," said Peavy, who tied a career-high with 16 strikeouts. "I'm just trying to get outs. Records are the last thing from your mind."

Peavy's gem was wasted when Stephen Drew hit a two-out, two-run homer off Trevor Hoffman in the ninth to give the Diamondbacks a 3-2 victory over the Padres Wednesday night.

Big Unit Makes First Start Of The Season For D-Backs

Randy Johnson won four of his five Cy Young Awards and a World Series title with the Diamondbacks. On Tuesday, the 43-year-old will pitch for the franchise for the first time since 2004.

Johnson makes his first start of the season on Tuesday night when the Diamondbacks host the Padres.

The Diamondbacks jumped at the chance to reacquire Johnson in January after the pitcher expressed a desire to play close to his Paradise Valley, Arizona home.
