MLB To Give Top Prospects 'Spring Breakout' In 2024

Dec 14, 2023 12:31 AM

Major League Baseball will showcase the sport's best young players during a series of spring training games it's calling "Spring Breakout," the league announced Wednesday.

The event, scheduled to take place March 14-17, will pit an organization's best prospect group against another team's in a game that's part of a doubleheader with a regularly scheduled spring game. Although highly regarded prospects often participate in major league spring training games, rosters filled with the best minor league players from each team typically participate on the backfields at spring complexes.

MLB Counters With Final International Draft Offer

Jul 25, 2022 12:51 AM

With a deadline looming, MLB on Sunday submitted what was billed as a final offer regarding an international draft, sources told ESPN.

The league increased the amount of money that would be guaranteed to the top 600 international players by $10 million, going from $181 million to $191 million, sources said. But the two sides remain very far apart, and the prospect of a deal seems unlikely.

It is unclear whether the MLB Players Association would submit another counter Monday, or whether the union would take MLB's latest offer seriously enough to submit it to a vote among its player leadership.

Dodgers' Triple-A Club Selects Carson Fulmer In MiLB Rule 5 Draft

Dec 9, 2021 7:57 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers' Triple-A club selected Carson Fulmer from Cincinnati on Wednesday with the 39th and final pick of the Triple-A phase of Major League Baseball's annual draft of unprotected players.

The Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft was postponed because of MLB's lockout of the players association, which started last week following the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement.

The Triple-A phase involved players left off 38-man Triple-A rosters.

Angels Use All 20 Draft Picks On Pitchers

Jul 13, 2021 11:33 PM

The Los Angeles Angels used all 20 of their 2021 draft picks on pitchers.

Miami University right-hander Sam Bachman was the Angels' first-round pick. Nineteen of the 20 picks were college pitchers.

Angels scouting director Matt Swanson said the team didn't necessarily rule out selecting a position player, especially in the earlier rounds, but at some point during the final 10 rounds on Tuesday decided to "let it ride."

"Today was really targeting pitching. It's obvious," he said. "We took 20 pitchers. That was a strong focus for us today. There were so many valuable pitchers to bring into the organization, so just go all out and play the hot hand."

2021 Draft Order Will Be Set By Standings; Pirates Get No. 1 Pick

Oct 13, 2020 8:34 AM

Major League Baseball has determined that the final order of the 2021 draft will be determined by reverse order of the 2020 final standings.

It's been believed for quite some time that MLB would stick with the traditional way of ordering draft selections.

The March agreement between MLB and the players association gave Rob Manfred has the right to modify the draft order rather than let the 60-game 2020 regular season determine the selections.

The confirmation means the Pittsburgh Pirates will have the No. 1 overall pick.

Tigers Take Spencer Torkelson With No. 1 Pick

Jun 10, 2020 9:02 PM

The Detroit Tigers used the first overall pick in Wednesday night's amateur draft on Arizona State slugger Spencer Torkelson.

Torkelson is the first college first baseman and the first right-handed-hitting first baseman ever selected with the first overall pick.

He played first base at Arizona State, but the Tigers announced him as a third baseman.

"We know he can play first, but our scouts strongly feel that he can play third base, and that's our intent at this point," Tigers general manager Al Avila said. "He's exactly the type of player we hoped would be there with the first pick. At this point, we're going to send him out as a third baseman."
