Francisco Liriano could return to the mound for the Twins this Sunday against the Royals, according to ESPN.com.

He hasn't pitched in the major leagues for 17 months because of an elbow injury, but the declining health of Minnesota's rotation could force him onto the mound.

If he feels and pitches well following his scheduled minor league start on Tuesday, he is expected to be called up.

"First we've got to see how [Liriano] does. He should be stretched out to pretty close to 100 pitches [Wednesday], if everything goes good. ... If he looks like he really struggled and needs more time, then we'll give him more time. But if he keeps that progression that we've seen from spring training, then we'll make a decision. If it goes good, bring him up here," Manager Ron Gardenhire said Tuesday.
